Effective and Atmospheric Opening. Bram
Stoker manages to create a gripping atmosphere right from the start. By using
Jonathan Harker's personal journal, the reader is invited directly into the
character's experience-making the suspense feel real and personal. Strong Use
of Cultural Details. Descriptions of the local people's food, customs, and
fears of the evil night give color to the setting of the story and add
authenticity to the world built. It also reinforces the sense of alienation
felt by Jonathan. Criticism of Western Rational Attitudes. Harker represents
the rational and superstitious Westerner. However, this attitude makes him
vulnerable to danger. This can be read as a satire on the arrogance of the
modern world that refuses to believe in anything beyond reason. Dracula's
Mysterious and Disturbing First Impression. Although Dracula initially
appears polite and friendly, Stoker inserts many hints that he is a dangerous
creature. This contrast adds a sense of suspicion and keeps the reader
wanting to know what's really going on. A Slow but Dangerous Introduction. While
not much action happens yet, these early chapters are filled with foreboding,
religious symbols, and a sense of entrapment-all gothic elements that build
the foundation of classic horror. Effective and Atmospheric Opening |

In this section, the atmosphere goes from
just weird to downright tense. Jonathan Harker begins to realize that he is
trapped and cannot get out of the castle. Count Dracula's strangeness becomes
clearer, especially when he is invisible in the mirror and reacts strangely
to blood. Dracula's action of throwing away the mirror is a symbol that the
truth is being hidden. The tension rises rapidly, and Jonathan's fear begins
to feel real. This is the starting point where the horror in the story really
begins. |

provides an increasingly suspenseful and
mysterious experience. As a reader, I felt more and more caught up in the
tension Jonathan was feeling. When the three vampire women appeared, I could
feel the sexual and threatening atmosphere all at once, creating a deeper
sense of insecurity and curiosity. I began to feel that Jonathan was really
in a dangerous situation and could not escape Dracula. I was also impressed
with how Stoker portrayed a calm but powerful Dracula, and this added to the
mystery surrounding the character. |

I felt that the tension Jonathan was experiencing
was getting more and more real, especially with the atmosphere almost keeping
him trapped in hopeless fear. The use of words like “soporific” illustrates
how physically and emotionally exhausted and depressed Jonathan is. I also
feel that “abyss” not only describes a physical abyss, but also an inner
abyss that makes him feel isolated and lost. Dracula's increasingly menacing
presence created the feeling that he was completely out of reach of any rules
or punishments, and this made me even more curious about what would happen
next. I could feel how Jonathan's anxiety or apprehension slowly overcame
him, which made me even more immersed in the story. As a reader, I was really
impressed with the way Stoker created a creepy atmosphere, keeping me
wondering if Jonathan would make it out of Dracula's clutches. |
